Sports has always been an important part of American culture. Sports is of particular importance for People with Disabilities (PWDs) because participation in adaptive sports has often broken stereotypical barriers, led to greater opportunities in education, and advanced disability rights.  As the number of PWDs participating in sports has increased, sports activity has resulted in better health and greater social integration.  Sports offer PWDs a way to demonstrate their capabilities and strengths.  While a few well-known athletes with disabilities have enjoyed success in professional sports (Casey Martin, Jim Abbott, Tom Dempsey, etc.), this course will focus on the burgeoning of adaptive sports.  Involvement in adaptive sports at any level demonstrates what PWDs can do and as a result represents a revolutionary way to advance civil rights and increase access to health care.

What is an Orientation Leader?

An Orientation Leader (OL) is an ambassador for Syracuse Welcome to help incoming students transition to Syracuse University. They assist with move-in, help facilitate large scale events, and serve as a resource for all Orientation and Syracuse related questions. Orientation Leaders must work well in a team, possess strong communication skills, be responsible, punctual, and enthusiastic about SU. OLs cannot be Resident Advisors (RAs), Dean’s Team Members or Peer Advisors due to the conflicting time commitments. Orientation Leaders are also expected to come back to campus early to receive training.
Orientation leaders have to meet a minimum set of requirements in order to be offered a position. Each applicant must:
  • Be a full-time Syracuse University undergraduate student
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher, which must be held through the Spring and Summer semesters
  • Be in good judicial standing

University Lectures presents Naomi Klein

Naomi Klein is an award-winning journalist, syndicated columnist and author of the 2007 New York Times and No. 1 international bestseller “The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism.” In her most recent book, 2014’s “This Changes Everything,” Klein argues that climate change isn’t just another issue to be neatly filed between taxes and health care. The climate crisis challenges us to abandon the core “free market” ideology of our time, restructure the global economy, and remake our political systems. In short, either we embrace radical change ourselves or radical changes will be visited upon our physical world.

During a dinner on Tuesday, November 3, 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Goldstein Alumni & Faculty Center, students can learn the answers to a number of questions that may arise about professional meals, such as which fork to use, when to unfold a napkin, how to eat and answer a question at the same time, or whether to use utensils for finger foods. The evening features a four-course meal, a bit of fun, and everything a student needs to know about dining etiquette. There are 85 seats available on a first-come, first-served basis. To reserve a spot, students should go to Career Services (235 Schine) with a $10 refundable deposit by Friday, October 30.

26th Annual Graduate Student Research Conference 


Call for submissions: Spatial Awareness, Representation, and Gendered Spaces 

Thinking Gender 2016 invites submissions for individual papers, pre-constituted panels, posters, and—for the first time!—films and interactive media on topics that focus on the awareness of self, representation, and the navigation and negotiation of social and cultural space. We welcome submissions—across all disciplines and historical periods—that engage with the politics of gender, race, sexuality, and space. We also intend to address international and transnational encounters, and colonization and decolonization practices. We invite scholarship engaging the following topics or others related to the conference theme of “Spatial Awareness, Representation & Gendered Spaces”: 

·       Gender representation and state feminism

·       Physical culture and the body

·       Innovation through gender

·       Productive and reproductive labors

·       Security and gendered nationalism

·       Implicit bias and stereotype threat

CSW accepts submissions from graduate students who are registered at US or international colleges or universities. Please note that we do not accept submissions from papers presented at previous Thinking Gender conferences. Previously published materials are also not eligible. If, however, the material is forthcoming, we will consider approving the submission. Filmmakers are encouraged to submit films even if they have submitted for other events. Undergraduate students are eligible for poster submissions. 

All applicants are required to submit an abstract (250 words) and CV (2 pages max). Students proposing individual papers and posters must submit a proposal (5 double-spaced pages max) and a Works Cited (1 page max). Students submitting films and mixed media must submit a film synopsis (2 page max). All components are to be submitted to the website at https://uclacsw.submittable.com, according to the submission guidelines. For pre-constituted panels, a 250-word description of the panel topic is required, in addition to the materials required for individual paper submissions. RMIT University’s Centre For Education, Training and Work in the Asian Century and Lancaster University’s Centre for Social Justice and Wellbeing in Education are jointly hosting a conference: 

Social Justice in Times of Crisis and Hope: Young People, Well-being and the Politics of Education

Wednesday 6th – Friday 8th July 2016, Barcelona, Spain

The 21st Century has so far been characterised by conflict, displacement, growing economic insecurity and austerity. Increasing social polarisation has meant that contemporary societies are becoming more unequal with smaller segments of the population having access to the most wealth. Recent years have seen large numbers of young people involved in social movements aimed at creating socially just societies. The ongoing conflicts around the world and the recent refugee crisis in Europe has only intensified calls for justice, equity, compassion and understanding. We live in times of despair and conflict, but also times of hope and action.

This three-day conference (including a half-day networking event) asks delegates to explore the role of social justice in times of crisis and hope. We ask for papers that examine the role of young people in contemporary social movements, with the kinds of demands that are being made by the world’s young people, and with the spaces within which they are making such demands. In addition we encourage papers that engage with the notion of well-being, with what this means in the contemporary moment and for whom. Finally we wish to interrogate the politics of education, to think about the limits and possibilities, and the challenges and opportunities for social justice through education.

Call for Submissions: All the Weight of Our Dreams


This is the second and final call for submissions for All the Weight of Our Dreams, an ambitious forthcoming anthology of writings and artwork by autistic people of color that will be the first of its kind. Following in the footsteps of groundbreaking anthologies like Loud Hands: Autistic People, Speaking and QDA: A Queer Disability Anthology, we aim to provide a specific space to collect and celebrate work by autistic people of color.

The deadline is November 15. 

If you identify as both (1) autistic (self-diagnosis does count) and (2) a person of color, racialized, or non-white, then you are welcome and encouraged to share your work with us. Feel free to send in your personal essays, poetry, short fiction, and artwork (with captions). Detailed submission guidelines available here

Submissions from children and youth are welcome along with submissions from adults and elders. Submissions can also come from people living in any country. Contributors will be paid for their work (though the exact amount has not been determined yet).

Syracuse University Login Study

Do you find computers and the Internet difficult to use because of your cognitive disability?

Our research aims to make computers and the Internet more accessible and easier to use for people like you. 

We are a group of researchers at Syracuse University and we are recruiting adults with cognitive disabilities, including those with developmental disabilities such as autism and specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia to better understand their difficulties in using current login systems. The researchers will visit their home or other environment (e.g., public library) where the participants regularly use computers and the Internet. 

The visit will take about 1 hour in which the researchers will observe how participants use computers and the Internet, and log into various services, attempting to uncover any difficulties that the participants experience. The researchers will also ask the participants to fill out two surveys and conduct an interview to better understand their needs. 

Participants who complete the study will receive up to $30. If you’re interested in participating in this study, please fill out our recruitment survey at http://goo.gl/1hWZkN.
